Some things are just meant to be. At least that is my personal opinion, and with my experience photographing the Sargent family, I only feel more validated that it’s true.
I was lucky enough to meet this beautiful family of four (plus one on the way) this last November for a mini session day eL did at Indian Run falls in Dublin. We spent 30 minutes together, exploring the trail, taking photos along the way, surrounded by a sea of gold & brown leaves at our feet. The lighting was gorgeous, and so was the mommyofthree-to-be (that works, right?). She and I clicked instantly and that day we spoke about doing her maternity photos a month later, plus the newborn photos in February. I was thrilled to be the one to document this part of their lives, the final pregnancy and birth of their third son.
When December was upon us, we elected to have an in home maternity session since it was so cold outside, and also in hopes of keeping the environment comfortable for the brothers/getting them a little familiar with me being in their home two months later to take photos of their new baby brother. Sometimes siblings are in the mood to take photos, and sometimes they aren’t! It’s always good to be ready for anything, as most photographers who have worked with youngsters already know. We all had fun moments together during the maternity session – the boys coming in and out of wanting to take photos – which totally worked for all of us.
Luckily, the winter holidays make the time go by quicker than normal (or so it seems), so waiting for baby boy to arrive was easier than expected. They scheduled his cesarean on the 6th of February, and I was able to meet him a short five days later. Returning to their home was exciting for me, because this time there would be a brand new baby to love on!! As I walked in, I noticed some of the photographs from our previous sessions were printed and displayed on the walls of the play room, the entry way, the hallway, and in their bedroom as well! Seriously the best compliment a photographer can get is having their work displayed for all to see (Facebook profile photos and cover photos are also on that list).
And then, there he was – Walter. Walter! So peaceful and cozy in the warmth of his new home.
After our initial “hellos” we headed upstairs to the master bedroom to begin our session. The whole house was warm and comfortable and I let them be themselves, taking natural images of their family together. Walter was hungry and alert the entire session, even as we went downstairs for some full family photos, and then back upstairs for some solo photos of Walter to finish our lifestyle newborn session for the day.
It was such a privilege to be their birth story/family photographer and I only hope these will not be the only photos I take of them!! Repeat clients are more like friends to us, and we like it like that.
